Kayts was built for people who work with research: students, scientists, anyone who needs an answer they can check. This is what happens between your question about a paper and the answer, and where its limits are.
Finding the paper
Research in Kayts searches OpenAlex, an open catalog of over 250 million scholarly works. You can narrow a search by year, type and topic, keep only open-access works, and sort by relevance, by citations or by date.
If you already know the paper, paste its DOI or a ResearchGate link. Kayts finds it in OpenAlex by its identifier or title. ResearchGate pages themselves are never downloaded: the site blocks servers and its terms forbid it, so Kayts works from the catalog instead.
Reading it
- Open access: Kayts fetches the full text and works from all of it.
- Behind a paywall: Kayts works from the abstract and says so. If you have the PDF, add it yourself.
- Your own files: PDF, Word, Excel, CSV and text files are read right in your browser. Scanned PDFs go through text recognition (OCR) in English and Polish, up to 30 pages; the result may contain errors.
One chat holds up to 12 sources, so you can put several papers side by side.
Answering from it
When your sources are in the chat, every claim drawn from them carries a citation like [1], pointing to the source it came from. When the sources don't cover your question, Kayts says so instead of filling the gap with a guess.
You don't have to open Research to get there: in any chat, when you ask about studies or the state of knowledge on a topic, Kayts looks up papers on its own, lists the ones it found and names them in its answer. For one specific open-access paper, its PDF appears as a card in the chat.
What to keep in mind
- An AI can misread a source. The citations are there so you can check the claim against the paper in a click.
- An abstract is not the paper. For a paywalled work, the answer is only as good as what the abstract says.
- Text recognition on scans is good but not perfect, especially on tables and formulas.
